When your car's transmission slips during acceleration, it usually means the engine is revving but the power isn't reaching the wheels effectively. This is a serious "red flag" that can lead to total transmission failure if ignored. Common Causes of Transmission Slipping
Low or Contaminated Fluid: This is the most frequent culprit. Transmission fluid provides the hydraulic pressure needed to engage gears. If it's low (often due to a leak) or old and "burnt," the system can't maintain enough pressure to stay in gear.
Worn Clutch Plates or Packs: In automatic transmissions, internal clutch packs use friction to change gears. Over time, this friction material wears down, causing the plates to struggle to "grip".
Worn Transmission Bands: These metal bands hold gears in place. If they become loose, stretched, or broken, the transmission will slip, especially when shifting into second or third gear.
Faulty Solenoids: These electro-hydraulic valves control fluid flow. If a solenoid fails or gets stuck, it won't direct fluid correctly, leading to erratic shifting or slipping.
Failing Torque Converter: This component transfers power from the engine to the transmission. A failure here often feels like slipping and may be accompanied by a shuddering sensation during acceleration
