Reliability and Core Issues

While the mechanical gears themselves are generally robust, the electronic control systems and "dry" clutch design are highly prone to failure.

  • Design Flaw: Unlike many other DCTs, Ford used a "dry" clutch system that lacks oil cooling, leading to frequent overheating, glazing, and premature wear.

  • Shuddering and Jerking: The most common symptom is severe vibration or "shuddering" when accelerating from a stop.

  • Component Failures:

    • Transmission Control Module (TCM): This computer frequently malfunctions, causing the car to lose power, fail to shift, or shift into neutral while driving.

    • Clutch Packs: These often fail as early as 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

    • Input Shaft Seals: Faulty seals can leak oil onto the dry clutches, causing them to slip and shudder
